Video clip of Timothy Hoag playing the 7-manual Midmer-Losh organ. This video was recorded at the time of the recording sessions for the Auditorium Organ CD made on November 3 & 4, 1998 and shows the hall prior to the renovation. The bleachers were set up for a sporting event. [Windows Media]

Rare recordings of Barbara Fesmire and Lowell Ayers practicing on the Midmer-Losh organ. The recordings are not professional quality, however, one can get a good idea of some of the more subtle beauty of the instrument. The recording date is unknown.

  • Fanfare [RealAudio] [MP3] played by Barbara Fesmire
  • Sample of It Might As Well Be Spring played by Lowell Ayers [RealAudio] [MP3]
  • Portion of the Widor Toccata from the 5th Symphony, played by Barbara Fesmire [RealAudio] [MP3]
  • Excerpt from a Sousa's Stars and Stripes played by Lowell Ayers [RealAudio] [MP3]

Musical Selections

We have two samples of the main organ's awe-inspiring sound; they are selections from our CD (available from our Store) "The Auditorium Organ - Atlantic City Convention Hall." The samples are provided in MP3 format.

Note: If you use Real Audio to play the MP3 clip there is a visualization tool which produces some fantastic images of the Ad Nos. For a really good time, use Nebulae, Flux Wave, or FlamewurX. Also, there are visualization tools in Winamp Your results will vary depending on your computer. If you use these with the CD, there will be up to a one-second delay between what you hear and what you see.

  • Abide With Me -- William Monk -- 3:18
Track 10 - This hymn, played by Clifton Stroud II, was chosen to demonstrate the build-up to the tutti (including the 100-inch Tuba Imperial, but excluding the even louder Ophicleide).
File size 3.1 MB, download time roughly 7 1/2 minutes at 56 Kbps

  • Ad Nos Ad Salutarum Undam (Conclusion) -- Franz Liszt -- 2:42
Track 12 - The final chorale from Franz Liszt's monumental work Ad Nos Ad Salutarum Undam, played by Stephen D. Smith. Listen out for the Grand Ophicleide -- added via the Grand Great department -- on the last chord.
File size 2.5 MB, download time roughly 6 minutes at 56 Kbps

Outtakes from the CD recording -- Antoni Scott recorded several versions of the Toccata in D Minor and the Psalm 100 during the two-day recording session in November, 1998. Here are some interesting outtakes from the session that are not on the CD recording.

  • This "high-octane" version of the Toccata in d Minor used everything available except the big 50" and 100" reeds, but added the 32' Bombardon and the 64' Diaphone Profunda in the Pedal.
File size 2.6 MB, download time roughly 6 1/2 minutes at 56 Kbps

  • The version of Psalm 100 starts as [1] an improvisation on the Great-Solo's Orchestral Oboe followed by [2] a mezzo-forte section using some of the great reeds except the big reeds (no 50"s or 100"s) and a full pedal with no 32' Bombardon or 64' Diaphone Profunda, followed by [3] a forte verse using more reeds and a full pedal ( 32's and 64'). Verse [4] goes back to the string section and a soft pedal (probably the 16's only) followed by [5] the full organ and pedal (everything, but no 50"s or 100"s).
File size 2.9 MB, download time roughly 7 1/4 minutes at 56 Kbps

The Ballroom Kimball Organ [RealAudio: Low bandwidth / High bandwidth] [MP3] -- This is an excerpt from a brief test recording made in the Ballroom following the recordings of the Midmer-Losh organ appearing on THE AUDITORIUM ORGAN CD. The recording was made on November 4, 1998. Timothy Hoag is the organist. This was the last recording of the organ made prior to the building renovation and the removal of its relay.

Blower Start Up/Shut Down [RealAudio: Low bandwidth / High bandwidth] [MP3] -- This is an unexpurgated version of the blower sounds made for Track 1 of the CD. The Right Stage chamber blowers aurally illustrate how much power and energy is required for the organ. First the 100” compressor starts, then the low pressure blower on the right followed by the high pressure blower on the left. Once at speed, the blowers are sequentially shut down. Dennis McGurk, the organ Curator at the time, is heard saying "Ready on the Right", etc. at the start of the recording. In addition to these three blowers there are four more for a total of seven - two for the Left Stage chamber and two for the Gallery and Ceiling chambers - for a total of 600 Horsepower.
